The ISO is “the world’s largest developer of voluntary International Standards,” according to the organization’s website.
As previously mentioned, ISO 9001 is a quality management standard and it’s part of the ISO 9000 “family.” But what exactly does this all mean? According to the ISO, it published its first quality management standard in 1987 and, almost three decades later, “standards in the ISO 9000 family have gone on to become some of the most well known and best selling standards.” Specifically, ISO 9001 sets out the criteria for a quality management system and, according to the ISO website, it “is the only standard in the family that can be certified to… It can be used by any organization, large or small, regardless of its field of activity.”
